Handheld
devices, incorporating smart phones and PDA’s, allow people in the field
to capture data such as bar codes, RFID’s, images, signatures and GPS
co-ordinates on the move and achieve secure real-time synchronization
with back office systems. Until now, cumbersome notebook computers were used to perform “mobile” computing functions that can now be accommodated by handheld PDA’s – information lookup, capture, analysis, printing, presentations, etc – with the advantage of synchronizing data with back office systems over GPRS/EDGE/3G networks. Data capture options include 1D/2D barcode scanners, camera, touch screen, GPS, RFID, card swipe, smart card, keyboard data entry, and voice over IP. Mobile printer accessories enable instant printing of forms, invoices and delivery notes.
Every business requirement is unique - especially in the mobility field. That is why we custom build packaged solutions that optimize functionality and value. One example is the combination of printer and PDA/smartphone technology with long lasting power management within a compact rugged casing designed for tough field conditions in Africa. We use best-in-class international and local capabilities to provide integrated hardware solutions tailored for specific application requirements. A pre-requisite for real time voice and data communication between people on the move and back office systems is that wireless communication infrastructures must be available wherever needed. Vodacom, MTN and CellC provide excellent cellular network coverage across virtually every part of South Africa. Through our network service partner, handheld devices can connect to the closest wireless network – cellular or broadband wireless – and communicate across all available infrastructures whichever provides the closest link en route. This means it is possible to have end-to-end voice, image, data, email, and Internet communication anywhere anytime. Even near the office, voice over IP software turns cell phones into cordless PABX extensions allowing free calls to anyone in or near the office. Broadband
connection to the Internet can be achieved via land based connections to
computers (ADSL, Diginet, Optical Fiber) or via wireless networks for
smart cell phones (Vodacom, MTN, CellC). Other wireless Internet
connection options are myWireless, iBurst and Satelite. Broadband
connections often provide lower sustainable speeds (e.g. 100 – 200 Kbps
from international connections) compared to nominal speeds specified
(e.g. 512Kbps or 1Mbps). The general status quo in telephony is that telephones use PABX systems and Telkom infrastructure (ATM network) to communicate with the outside world. Cell phones use GSM networks to connect with other cell phone users, landline users and the Internet. Radio (RF) phones are used to connect people in the field with radio control centers. Each environment requires different infrastructure and administration. Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP), when deployed correctly, offers benefits such as: Fantastic digital sound quality; Free calling between branch offices; Free calling with telecommuter and mobile workers; Flexible call routing and caller-ID options. Open Source PBX software provides Voicemail services with Directory, Call Conferencing, Interactive Voice Response and Call Queuing. No technology can operate without the right software tools and applications. That is why we have teamed up with global suppliers of software tools and business applications that contribute to rapid and dependable solution delivery. Software developed with Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual Basic .NET and C#) can be deployed across a wide range of smart cell phones and PDA’s – BlackBerry, Nokia, Motorola, Palm, Sony-Ericsson. Ready to use components provide seamless access to data systems such as Lotus Domino, Oracle, SQL Server and DB2. Tools also create and customize forms and user interfaces. Other components accelerate the construction of robust business applications across any mobile technology platform. Another software tool delivers Macromedia and PowerPoint content plug-in free to Java enabled computers and other devices. Best-in-class tools leverage wireless and Internet technologies to securely manage network resources and access applications from anywhere. Solutions generally don’t see the light of day without competent project management and expertise provided by our solution integration partners. Industry focused solutions and broad-based mobile applications are delivered by these companies using components from OpenWorld. |
